Emperor Dawn

50 x 40 cm,   Oil on Canvas,   2011,    275

In the early months of the austral spring, the young penguin chicks  emerge from beneath their parents breasts to take a first look around their frozen world.  On this occasion, the pink afterglow from a brief appearance at noon of  the returning August sun marks the dawn of their life as an emperor penguins.  In the fullness of time they may each experience some 30 such Antarctic spring times.
