The weak polar sun provides a colourful midday sunset as a group of lonely emperor penguins gather on an ice floe. It is drifting amongst the tabular ice bergs of the Southern Ocean before its waters freeze heralding the beginning of the Antarctic winter. Immature penguins spend their first five winters at sea, their natural element, and will only return to the rookery of their birth in later years as mature adults to try and breed.
